Femi Oyeniran is an award-winning actor and filmmaker. Born in Nigeria, moving to the UK at the age of 10, he starred in iconic British film Kidulthood at 17 before completing a law degree at the London School of Economics. His acting career has seen him star in Adulthood as well as comedy Anuvahood. Other credits include Absolutely Fabulous, Taking Stock, Demons Never Die and more.
In 2013, he wrote, directed and produced feature film It’s A Lot. His next film THE INTENT, was released to unprecedented success. It was followed by a prequel THE INTENT 2: THE COME UP, which picked up “Best Film” at the MVisa awards as well as three awards at the National Film Awards. Both films have gone on to gain a global audience on Netflix.
He was also tapped up by Idris Elba to write an episode of his Netflix Original series Turn Up Charlie. He also has a producer credit on Sky Atlantic series Tin Star, which stars Tim Roth. He also directed a block of Comedy Central’s Drunk History: Black Stories as well as BET’s first UK-originated programme,The Culture Capsule.
Femi’s production company FAN STUDIOS, which he co-founded with Grime legend and filmmaker Nicky “Slimting” Walker, released the short film Against All Odds and relaunched legendary UK music channel Channel U in conjunction with Motown Records UK, in late 2020. Their BET UK show The Evolution of Black British Music, which documents the growth of rave and rap music in the past 30 years in the UK picked up a RTS Programme Award in the Arts category. October 2022 will see the release of Untold: From Raps to Riches, focusing on UK Rappers who have turned their hands to business. Femi co-directed and executive produced both series.
The company is due to release the feature film Trapping, which was co-written and directed by multiple award-winning director Penny Woolcock. Femi acts in and executive produced the project, which was launched on FAN STUDIOS streaming platform THE DROP on 15 September 2023. The company also produced the new season of Drunk History: Black Stories for Comedy Central.
Femi’s work as an actor and filmmaker has helped to define Black British film and British youth culture in the past couple of decades. Using London as a backdrop and authenticity as a barometer. Femi’s work shines a light on subcultural movements in London’s music, fashion and art scenes, way before they enter the mainstream.
